What We Do

What Is an Immobiliser?

An immobiliser is an electronic anti-theft device fitted to virtually all vehicles manufactured after 1998. It prevents the engine from starting unless it receives an authorised signal from the key's transponder chip. When the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key, it disables the fuel injection or ignition circuit, making the vehicle impossible to start.

When all keys are lost or the immobiliser module is faulty, standard OBD programming may not be possible. In these cases, we physically access the ECU's EEPROM chip — a small memory component that stores the vehicle's security data. By reading this chip directly, we extract the security seed and use it to generate a new authorised key or re-programme the immobiliser. Access247 technicians are experienced in EEPROM procedures for all major vehicle platforms.

How It Works

How We Fix an Immobiliser Fault

01
Fault Diagnosis
OBD diagnostic scan reads fault codes from the immobiliser module and ECU to identify the precise cause.
02
Key-to-Immobiliser Sync
Re-synchronisation of the key transponder to the immobiliser ECU via standard OBD key learning.
03
EEPROM Read (if needed)
For all-keys-lost scenarios, we physically read the EEPROM chip to extract the vehicle's security seed.
04
New Key Generation
Using the extracted security data, we generate and programme a new authorised key.
05
Verification
Post-repair scan confirms the immobiliser and key are correctly paired before we leave.

How EEPROM Programming Works

EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a small chip on the vehicle's ECU that stores the immobiliser security seed — a unique cryptographic identifier paired to the original keys. When all keys are lost, we read this chip directly using specialist hardware, extract the security seed, and use it to generate a new authorised key without any existing key being present.

This process requires specialist equipment and trained technicians. Access247's technicians are experienced in EEPROM procedures for all major vehicle platforms.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes an immobiliser fault?+

Common causes: dead key fob battery, faulty transponder chip, ECU reset or battery disconnect clearing key data, or failure of the immobiliser module itself.

Can the immobiliser be reset without the original key?+

Yes. Using EEPROM reading, we extract the security seed directly from the ECU and generate a new authorised key without an existing key.

Will this void my warranty?+

Standard key learning via OBD does not void manufacturer warranties. We use the same procedures as main dealers.

How do I know if it's the immobiliser and not another fault?+

The immobiliser warning light (a car outline with a key inside it) staying on after starting is the clearest indicator. We can also diagnose via OBD fault code reading.
